Reminiscence of the old space invaders arcade shooting game, Crusaders of Space 2 (CoS 2) is a union of the classics and modern, with style. The game throws in various elements from other genre as well in order to keep things fresh, such as different types of power ups, upgradeable ships and even a story that unfolds between episodes that will remind you of marvel comic style drawing. Your ship’s arsenal ranges from different types of bullets such as freezing and poison types, to a limited supply of missiles which packs more punch.

As you blast your way across the galaxy, you will get a chance to upgrade your ships along the way, and reveal the protagonist’s story as you progress through each episode. Of course, different types of enemies ranging from swarms of small alien ships to huge gun platforms will make sure this will not be a cake walk in the park. The variety and behavior of enemy ships are enough to keep you entertained and the reward for killing them are power ups which slowly floats down towards the bottom of the screen. At the end of later episodes you also get to square off with big and nasty looking alien boss ships where you have to destroy different parts of on the ship one by one.

This game is a good representation of its genre, with twists by adding RPG elements to the game like ship attribute upgrading and some storyline. The graphics are quite good with some aesthetic completion such as vivid effects, backgrounds and color lighting which may be more than a few cup of tea for some players. Despite these strengths, after several levels, it still leaves the feeling of wanting for more, or perhaps more immersion. Part of this could be due to the ship can only move sideways. Though I could understand the developers trying to keep the classical elements of such game, it still leaves you wondering how such extra dimension will add tremendously to the game.

So if you’ve got a soft spot for these type of genre, this game is a solid representation of its type. You may find yourself enjoying the game at ease during your spare few extra minutes waiting for the clock to tick on for that next appointment or getting off the office. With the full version housing over 120 levels and other features, it can only get better.

Game Play 8/10 : Solid game play for this type of game with added twist of customizable ship upgrades, a storyline at the end of each episode, lots of levels especially in the full version and a good variety of enemies.

Graphics 8/10 : Polished graphics with colorful eye candy that makes you feel like you are flying your ships through fire works. The background adds a lot to the atmosphere of the game.

Sound 7/10 : Your average joe sound effects. Does its job in this department.

Overall 8/10 : Recommended for any fans of this genre. Whether you are looking to kill away those extra hour waiting to leave the house for your next appointment or feel like staying up late at night, this game might just tick all the boxes. While the game may leave some hard core shoot ‘em up gamers wondering about what should have been, it does deliver on the fun factor and that my friends, is what games are designed for.
